At the Spring 2010 meeting of the Society for General Microbiology In Edinburgh I spoke about ‘Social Media in Microbiology Education and Research’. In my presentation I reviewed how I use blogging, podcasting, and other social media tools to teach the public about viruses.
Below is a video recording of my presentation. Many thanks to Prof. AJ Cann for the opportunity to speak about our efforts. I also enjoyed excellent presentations by Prof. Graham Hatfull, Cameron Neylon, Kevin Emamy of citeulike, and Jason Hoyt of Mendeley.
Thank you for flying over to give this great talk Vincent. Sorry the weather was so bad!
Hi Vincent: just listened to the download; great talk! I was interested in your experience of using other media than simple podcasting; it has been something I have been wanting to try – following my guru, the estimable Alan Cann. Of course, we have the little problem that here in Africa – still – the bandwidth is so lousy, and especially for students, that these applications remain pipe dreams. Our students (and in fact our staff) are not supposed to use Facebook during working hours, for example, ruling its use for teaching rather impractical.
As for the blog: I have already made mine examinable, and then followed through on detailed questions on material covered only in the blog. Turns out some people just don't listen…but the ones who did, seemed to enjoy being able to get stuff that had only just been published, or even stuff that had not yet, made available to them for teaching/learning purposes.
Keep up the good work!!

As you know, I haven't used forums as part of my online teaching. I
have no doubt that they are useful, but I only spoke about what I
actually use.
