Eddie’s mention of a creationist teacher leaving out a large chunk of a textbook focusing on evolution reminds me of evolutionist teachers leaving out the largest section of time (If Cosmology Is “Off,” How Can Biology Be “On?”). Is sectionalism that popular?
The panel’s incredible span of knowledge about viruses, and the suggestions as to where to look for ancestors of SARS-CoV-2 etc., compels me to ask them what they think about MetaSUB, which did a survey to wit:
“The very first study [link] from what has grown into the MetaSUB team demonstrated that nearly half of the DNA from subway surfaces didn’t match any known organism. The data paint a picture of a diverse ecology that we know relatively little about, spanning the tree of life to include prokaryotes, fungi, eukaryotes, protists and viruses (mostly bacteriophages) adapted to live in our human-made spaces.”
(MetaSUB).
Would be very interesting to have an interview with Alina Chan or Richart Ebright to provide balance to the Holmes interview.
